An Impromptu Powder Room Re-do

If you follow me on Instagram stories you know that we decided to take full advantage of the long weekend and jump start a project we’ve been putting off.

What started as a simple toilet switch out somehow turned into a full powder room re-do. Hmmmm….funny how that happens. Wink.

Truthfully, the powder room commode (I just couldn’t type the T-word one more time) was the last remaining original potty to the house, which is kinda gross when you think about it. This house was built in the late 80’s, just think about the number of tushes that have used these facilities. Actually, I’d rather not. Ignorance is bliss, right????

ANYWHO, we went to Home Depot to pick out our new potty, as you do. Came home to remove the old one, next thing I know the sink is out too and we’re having a big old brain-storm session over what to do next.

Someone in this household loves to do trim work and hasn’t had the opportunity since our dining room project in Chicago…so moulding was a given. (I’ll share all those details in a later post, promise.)

When sky’s the limit, one can go a little crazy. Here’s how our thought process unfolded…

Initially, we were very drawn to the idea of floor to ceiling moulding. Just look at it. So clean and crisp and elegant. What’s not to love?

But then I rememberd the hours I spent hand panting the walls (check out the post here). And I thought, do I really want to cover that all up? No, no I do not. Best to stick with the old 1/3 of a wall formula.

Plus, so nice for kid hand washing. I mean, how do they managed to get water EVERYWHERE. It’s beyond me.

When it came to the moulding there were two trains of thought…paint it white or don’t paint it white.

A household divided.

I just couldn’t let go of the idea of painting said moulding to coordinate with the existing wall treatment. Would that be crazy or would that be super cool and moody?

Definitely B - super cool and moody!

Well, hopefully because I had to fight for this one. Fingers crossed.

Having a small room be dark and moody is one thing, turning it into a little jewel box is another thing entirely.

We want a jewel box, right?

This is the argument I made to my family.

Let’s not only paint the moulding navy, but let’s paint it HIGH GLOSS navy.

That will be beautiful, right???

Crickets.

Oh, and as long as we’re pushing the family’s tolerance … let’s paint the ceiling too.

Don’t you think that will be STUNNING?!?

Nothing. Silence.

You know what they say, go big or go home.

I chose big.

Until next time…
