A Birthday Bedroom Update

You may have heard we had a birthday around here…our youngest turned 8.

Still wrapping my head around it, honestly.

But, there’s one thing that makes it easier for dear old Mom - the girls often request a birthday bedroom update. And you know I am happy to oblige.

This years’ birthday bedroom update was a challenge, purple walls were the only stipulation (well that and a cuddly body pillow). Purple’s not my fave, which is putting it mildly.

But, it’s not about ME (what?1?) and I aim to please…so, purple it is!

When we moved to Charlotte, 6 years ago, our oldest daughter had just turned 5. She LOVED all things pink and “Fancy Nancy” so we painted her new room a lovely shade of pale pink to compliment her new hot pink bedding - it really was adorable. But, you guessed it, a short few months later she decided she was totally over pink and turquoise was her favorite color.

Ugh.

We basically had to start from scratch. Sure, I filtered the pink out a little at time and added more teal and turquoise, but it wasn’t until her 10th birthday that we re-painted. Let me tell you, those last couple of years were painful - we heard about the pink DAILY.

All this to say, I didn’t want to go down the same road by investing a lot of time and effort (not to mention money) into a purple room, only for her to hate it in a matter of months.

Compromise, my friends, was the only way forward.

She got light lavender walls (BM Sugarplum) with plenty of youthful accents. Hello, canopy and unicorns! Purple sheets and star duvet …

It was the least we could do, actually, because mostly everything else in this space was a hand-me-down not specifically meant for her. She has the old guest bed from IKEA, an old maple dresser and bookshelf from my childhood, a cast-off drop leaf table & chaise from the playroom. And until recently, a lot of left over decor from her sister’s room.

I get a touch of sophistication with a few more grown up, neutral pieces like the grey bedding, chaise and lamps. All of which will last well into her teen years, hopefully.

In a couple of years the unicorns, canopies and twinkle lights will probably come down - but the main pieces will remain and we can make the switch to a tween room. That’s the hope, at least. Until she suddenly hates purple!

In the meantime, kids will be kids. Let them love their unicorns and twinkle lights. And give them lots and lots of vessels to corral their stuff.

until next time,
