A Navy Bar Plan & Update
How’s everyone holding up out there? About the same over here, I’m sure. Trying to stay busy and keep our sanity in check.
I’m still plugging away at our bar makeover project. Honestly, I had hoped to make more progress but kids, homeschooling, motivation and another project in the backyard have distracted me.
I did manage to narrow in on an inspirational image and a plan for the space tho, so there's that.
First things first, paint the cabinets navy.
Add in the decorative corbels as seen in the inspo pic.
Add in a mirrored backsplash. The one I have linked here is peel and stick. Anyone have any experience with that?
I’d also like to add in more decorative lighting and incorporate some of our existing artwork.
Sounds easy, right?
Here’s a refresher on where we started.
When we bought the house we had the granite, faucet and sink replaced. We also changed out the hardware.
Unlike in the kitchen, we did not have these cabinets painted (potential problem #1).
So here we go….
I’m not usually a fan of painters tape, but I tried to be good this time.
The bottom cabinet frames turned out great. No complaints, super easy.
Although the paint did seep thru the tape in several spots, which is annoying.
The top cabinet frames and interiors (remember I have glass fronted cabinet doors on the top), not so much. The paint was very streaky, initially, and took at least 3 coats each.
Also, you can see I left the hardware on the frames to reattach the doors (potential problem #2).
At this point I am feeling pretty confident. Everything is looking good.
The glass fronted cabinets had been taped, painted (front and back) and were left to dry for several days in the garage.
Removing the painters tape on the cabinet doors is when it all started to go off track. The paint had seeped thru the tape on both sides. A lot of scraping was required, which is totally manageable, but it did take off some of the paint on the frames. Worse still was how it revealed the inner white crease in the frame that holds the glass.
I’m not sure there is any way to paint that area without removing the glass. Hmmmm…
On to plan B. Remove the doors and have open shelving. Not my first choice, but I’m flexible. Ha.
Up next: fill the holes left from the hardware, sand & paint again.
I’m a little frustrated and realize I may have taken on too big of a project too soon after the island makeover, but I will persevere.
More to come…
