A DIY Frosted Tree

If there’s one thing to know about me and the holidays it’s that I’m team REAL tree, 100%.

I get that they aren’t for everyone, but for me, it’s a non-negotiable. So imagine my dismay when it came to dressing the shop for the holidays - I really, really, REALLY wanted a live tree but ultimately knew it didn’t make sense from a cost and maintenance stand point.

I finally caved and started researching faux trees. Insert sad face here.

I may have read this article at least 10 times.

After a lot of debate, I kinda figured if I had to do a faux tree, why not play it up by going with a flocked tree (plus I knew it would really pop against our newly painted dark green walls). Sadly, I couldn’t find a lightly flocked tree that I liked AND fit the budget.

In the end, I decided to “frost” it myself. With that in mind, I selected this tree.

I read a couple more tidbits about flocking a tree and the feedback was all the same - flocking sheds like crazy! I definitely didn’t want that happening in the shop, so I looked into alternative types of flocking and came across some recommendations for a spray paint and popcorn ceiling spray combo.

Time to get my DIY craft on.

A couple of light coats of basic white spray paint and a minimal application of popcorn ceiling spray later, I’m loving the extra depth and texture that my faux tree now flaunts.

I mean, obviously, it’s not a real tree but it’s not a super crazy chunky flocked tree either. It’s a lovely frosted tree (thanks to my hair stylist who coined the name) and I couldn’t be happier with it.

Side note: it still sheds tho (can’t compare to regular flocking since I’ve never done it) just being honest!

The frosted tree looks lovely, against the dark green walls, adorned with oversized ornaments in various metallics. It may not be a real tree with that special pine scent (which AGAIN are my favorite) but it looks pretty festive to me.

You may also notice that the mantel decor has changed between the first and last image - that’s because every Monday the mantel receives a makeover, “Monday Mantel Makeover”! You can follow along on my Instagram feed to see weekly updates.

Now that the shop is ready for the holidays, I’m turning to our own home. Looking forward to some forced family fun this weekend, when we head to the mountains to pick out our tree.

Until next time…
